- This seal is granted by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO). Its obtaining is absolutely voluntary and certifies that the company has been calculating its volume of GHG emissions for four years and at the end of this period has accredited its reduction.
- Incarlopsa has obtained the seal based on emissions data for 2021 and has certified a 9.95% reduction in the average emission intensity in the three-year period 2019-2021 compared to the three-year period 2018-2020, for scope 1+2.
Incarlopsa, a leading company from Castilla-La Mancha in the production and processing of pork products, continues to advance in its environmental commitment by obtaining the “Calculo y reduzco” (I calculate and reduce) seal, which is awarded by the Spanish Office for Climate Change under the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) to recognize the efforts of organizations in the fight against climate change and which have demonstrated a reduction in their volume of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.
The process for obtaining it is entirely voluntary, although interested companies must calculate and register their carbon footprint with the tool that MITECO makes available to them for a minimum period of four years, demonstrating that the volume of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions has been reduced in that period of time. In addition, companies wishing to be accredited must have a plan to reduce their GHG emissions and their reduction commitment must be validated by the Ministry.
“Achieving this certification is another step forward in our commitment to the environment. We are very satisfied with the work we are doing to reduce the impact derived from our activity and we will continue to take steps to achieve the goal we have set ourselves: carbon neutrality in 2050,” explains Monserrat García, director of Quality, R&D&I and Environment at Incarlopsa.
In the case of Incarlopsa, the company has obtained the “Calculo y reduzco” seal based on emissions data for the 2021 fiscal year. For this, the evolution experienced in the fiscal years 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 has been taken into account. In this time period, Incarlopsa has certified a 9.95% reduction in the average emission intensity in the three-year period 2019-2021 compared to the three-year period 2018-2020, for scope 1+2. This reduction applies to the activities of production and processing of meat products developed in the production plants located in Tarancón (Cuenca) and Guijuelo (Salamanca).
For activities related to the production of cured ham at the dryers in Tarancón (Cuenca), Corral de Almaguer (Toledo) and Olías del Rey (Toledo), the company has accredited a 1.00% reduction in the average emission intensity in the three-year period 2019-2021 with respect to the three-year period 2018-2020, for scope 1+2.
This certification places Incarlopsa as the first food company in Castilla-La Mancha to obtain this recognition, with data verified by authorized bodies and valid for one year. After this period, Incarlopsa must continue to prove its commitment to obtain renewal.
The seal identifies three levels of participation for one year
The seal linked to MITECO’s carbon footprint, offsetting and carbon dioxide absorption projects registry has a dual purpose. On the one hand, “it makes it easier for organizations to demonstrate their participation in the registry and, on the other hand, it reflects the degree of effort they have made in the fight against climate change”.
In this sense, MITECO “has considered it appropriate to distinguish between those organizations that calculate their carbon footprint and are on the path to reduce their emissions, from those that already reduce and/or compensate. The label therefore makes it possible to identify, for a defined period (which will be annual), three levels of participation: calculation of the carbon footprint, its reduction and/or offsetting”.
Organizations wishing to obtain this label must first “calculate their carbon footprint, as described in the Ministry’s supporting documents, and register in the ‘carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emission reduction commitments’ section of the registry. Once the Ministry validates these calculations, the organization will be able to obtain the seal reflecting this effort (CALCULATION).”
Subsequently, it will be assessed whether the reduction commitments have been made, in which case they will also be reflected in the seal (REDUZCO).
